The Omicron version of the coronaviruses has been the most common in the US last week, accounting for over 70% of new infections, according to federal health officials.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a six-fold increase in omicron's share of infections in one week.

It is even higher in a lot of the country. In the New York area, the Southeast, the industrial Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest, Omicron is responsible for an estimated 90% or more of new infections. More than 650,000 omicron infections occurred in the U.S. last week, according to the national rate.

The main version of the U.S. infections has been the delta variant. According to CDC data, more than 98% of coronaviruses were delta by the end of November.

The new numbers show the kind of growth seen in other countries.

She said that the numbers are not surprising.

The World Health Organization designated omicron a "variant of concern" on Nov. 26 after scientists in Africa first sounded the alarm. The Mutant has shown up in about 90 countries.

The omicron variant is not known if it causes more or less severe illness. Even without the extra dose, the vaccine still offers strong protection against severe illness and death, even if the booster shot is needed.

The senior scholar at the center for health security said that all of them have a date with omicron. If you want to interact with society and have any type of life, you need to be fully vaccined.

The CDC data showing omicron overtaking delta in the U.S. was not surprising, given what had been seen in other countries. He predicted that the holiday season would include breakthrough infections among the vaccine and unvaccinated that could stress hospitals already overburdened by delta.

The US data showed a remarkable jump in the growth of omicron, but other countries had seen it.

It is unclear how much milder omicron is compared to other versions.

Topol said that the uncertainty is the big one now. It will be a lot of hospitalizations and a lot of severe disease from omicron.

The CDC estimates are based on thousands of coronaviruses collected each week through university and commercial laboratories. The COVID-19 viruses are most abundant in certain versions of the genetic sequence.

After analyzing more samples, the CDC revised its estimate for the week that ended in December. The number of cases from omicron was not reported previously. omicron accounted for just 0.4% of cases the week before.

CDC officials don't know how many deaths or hospitalizations are caused by omicron.

Walensky said that he expects that the delta variant will be crowded out by omicron over time.
