Omicron: Festive sport goes behind closed doors in Wales to combat Covid-19

The 2020 Welsh Grand National was held at an empty Chepstow Racecourse.

The Welsh government is fighting against Covid-19's Omicron variant and will hold a festive sport in Wales.

The end date for the restrictions on all levels of sport in Wales is not set.

The first major fixture to be affected is the URC fixture between Cardiff and the Scarlets.

The Welsh economy minister said a fund will be set up to support clubs and venues.

No fans are 'catastrophic'.

The Welsh government said that the number of confirmed cases of the fast- moving variant had risen steeply.

One of the highlights of the year is the sporting events over the Christmas period. The new omicron variant could cause a lot of infections.

We need to do everything we can to protect people's health and control the spread of this awful virus.

We follow public health advice to keep people safe. The advice is that we need to act now in response to Omicron. We are giving people as much notice as we can.

Crowds will come back as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome to enjoy their favourite sports.

The Welsh Grand National will be held without spectators.

The initial plan is for the restrictions to stay in place until at least Friday, 7 January, as the rules will apply to all levels of sport in Wales.

The Welsh government says that a sporting event refers to all indoor and outdoor sporting events. Community sporting events which attract significantly smaller crowds are included.

The rate of coronaviruses infections in Wales is now over 500 per 100,000 people.

Mark Drakeford, the First Minister, warned of a gathering storm of omicron infections after the Christmas period as some strengthened measures were introduced to protect lives and livelihoods.

The coronaviruses regulations will be reviewed regularly.

The Boxing Day football game between Cardiff City and Coventry has already been called off.

The UK government did not place any restrictions on crowds at venues in England when the Welsh teams went to Millwall.

The game between Newport County and Forest Green Rovers in League Two is off because of Covid, but the game between Wrexham and Solihull Moors in the National League is on.

There are six games in the Cymru premier on Boxing day, with clubs expecting bigger crowds.

The lack of home games will affect the finances of the team, as they will not have fans to watch them.

In the meantime, the FA Cup will be played on 8 January, meaning that the gates will not be open for the games against Luton Town and Fulham.

The New Year's Day games will not have the traditional rowdy backdrop of rivalries among fans.

During the festive period, the ice hockey team must play two home games without fans.

The Welsh Government's minister of economy held meetings with Welsh sporting bodies and clubs before the decision was made.

The games would continue despite the recent cancellation of games.
