NC State's men's basketball program was placed on one year of probation and former coach Mark Gottfried was given a one-year show-cause order on Monday, as punishment for a former assistant coach helping facilitate money from Adidas to a prospect's family.
The Wolfpack were not banned from playing in the playoffs.
One of the more severe penalties a coach can receive is a six-year show-cause order. Even at a new school, the coach needs to be punished. The NCAA's committee on infraction can allow a school to show cause why it shouldn't be punished the same as the coach.
NC State imposed recruiting restrictions.
The NCAA created the Independent Accountability Resolution Process to handle complex cases. Under the new process, a complex case unit investigated the case, and the Independent Resolution Panel conducted a two-day hearing before delivering its decision. The IRP consists of five people with different levels of education and sports experience. There are no appeals in the IARP process.
The IARP adjudicates five other cases involving Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, LSU and Memphis.
The NCAA sent a notice of allegations to NC State regarding the recruitment of Dennis Smith Jr. The NCAA charged the school with two Level I violations and a failure-to-monitor charge.
Smith's family received a $40,000 payment from T.J. Gassnola, an Adidas consultant, in October 2015.
A jury in New York convicted former Adidas executive James Gatto, former Adidas consultant Merl Code, and aspiring business manager Christian Dawkins on conspiracy and fraud charges for their roles in a pay-for-play scheme to steer top recruits to Adidas-sponsored schools. The appeals court upheld their convictions.
During the criminal trial, Gassnola testified that he gave the money to Early, who said he was forwarding the money to Shawn Farmer, Smith's former trainer.
In its response to the NCAA's notice of allegations, NC State questioned if Early actually delivered the cash to Farmer or Smith's father, and if Adidas was the source of the money.
The university was sued in federal court in September 2020 for not making settlement payments to him after he was fired. A $400,000 settlement was reached through mediation.
While at NC State, Gottfried had a 123-86 record.
Cal State Northridge placed Gottfried and his staff on paid administrative leave in April of 2021. Izzi did not specify the alleged violations.
Cal State Northridge has a 37-51 record in three seasons by Gottfried. The Matadors have an interim coach this season, Trent Johnson, a former coach at LSU and TCU.
