Biennial World Cup: Fifa plans would 'generate extra £3.3bn'

France won the men's World Cup in Russia in the summer of 2018).

The delegates at the global summit were told that a biennial World Cup would generate in excess of 3 billion dollars in additional revenue.

The change is part of a new calendar.

The debate over the plan to double the number of World Cup tournaments intensified as all of the associations were invited to the summit.

The plans have been opposed by Uefa, Europe's major leagues and South American football's governing body.

The African governing body has given its support.

The delegates were told that the World Cup would have an increase in gate receipts, media rights, and sponsorship revenues of over eight billion dollars over the course of four years.

The meeting was told that national associations would be given an average of around $12.1m in additional funds, although the precise method of distribution was not clear.

In order to increase the chances of players from the poorer nations being developed to the full extent of their talent, the gap in funding between the rich and poor countries has to be narrowed.

A report commissioned by the World Leagues Forum in November said that the proposal by Fifa could cost domestic leagues and Uefa about 8 billion euro per season in lost TV rights and commercial agreements.

A report by Oliver & Ohlbau, which was published by Uefa on Friday, said that changing the international calendar would result in a revenue drop of between 2.5 and 3 billion euros.
