The Ashes: Australia would 'love' 5-0 whitewash

Steve Smith said that Australia would love to whitewash England.

Australia won the second Test by a wide margin to take a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.

In the last two tours of Australia, England have been defeated by a combined score of five times.

Smith was asked if his team-mates were motivated by the prospect of another whitewash.

We'll take it one game at a time. That's all we can do.

Smith said the hosts would love to wrap up the series in the third Test at Melbourne, but will need to play some good cricket to do so.

"It's great to be 2-0 up and hopefully we can continue this momentum into what should be an amazing Boxing Day Test match," he said.

We haven't let England back into the contest yet. In both games, we were in front and didn't let them back in.

"From our point of view, we want to keep driving forward and not allow England to take back any of the gains they've made."

Pat Cummins was ruled out of the match because he was close to someone who tested positive for Covid-19.

Smith said he was not concerned by England's defiance.

Buttler stood on his stumps and was out for 26 after surviving 207 balls for 26.

I was not getting nervous yet. Smith said that Stuart Broad was at the other end.

It was odd how he stepped on his stumps. He was trying to get off the ball. He played well, not the traditional way.

He gave England a bit of a sniff and his defence was really good.

Smith urged Australia's bowlers to not let England captain Joe Root get into a rhythm at the crease at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as the England skipper's wait for a century goes on.

"Cameron Green is the only one who has been able to unsettle him," he said.

"Joe has looked good when he has come out to bat." He's a quality player and we have to keep the pressure on him.
