The House select committee investigating the events of January 6 is looking into the possibility that Donald Trump committed a crime related to the Capitol riot.
Jake Tapper asked the Illinois representative if he believes Trump committed a crime and if the committee is investigating.
Kinzinger thinks that they will know by the end of the investigation whether or not Trump committed a crime.
Nobody is above the law. One of the two Republicans on the committee, Kinzinger, said that the president needs to be held accountable for allowing what happened on January 6 to happen.
It's too early to say if Trump acted criminally, but the congressman has a lot of questions about what the President was up to.
Kinzinger said that the committee is looking into a lot of detail about what happened that day, but that it's more important to look at what allowed the insurrection to happen in the first place.
What happened before January 6 is almost more important. The 6th happened because of rot in the democracy. Have we corrected from that? Kinzinger said.
In an interview with ABC's "This Week," Kinzinger said the committee could subpoena sitting members of Congress if necessary.
"Obviously, when you subpoena the former president, that comes with a whole kind of circus environment," Kinzinger said. We'll do it if we need him.
