YouTube and Disney End Fight, Bring Channels Back to YouTube TV

It was only one more day for Disney and YouTube to come together and be friends again. The 17 Disney-owned channels and local ABC News stations that briefly disappeared from the platform are now included in the service, meaning you are back to paying $64.99 per month for the service.

After failing to reach a new carriage deal on Friday, the day the old deal expired, Disney and YouTube announced that they had reached a new deal on Sunday. Disney-owned networks, like the Disney Channel and the Disney Junior, were already restored to access by YouTube. The disruption did not affect subscribers personal preferences or recommendations.

Even if it was just for a day, YouTube would honor the one-time discount it announced for base plan subscribers when they lost access to Disney-owned networks. Subscribers will receive a credit on their next bill, and they don't need to take any action.

The discount will be offered to subscribers who have taken steps to cancel their subscription if they resume their membership before they lose access.

It would seem that it was YouTube who caved, although neither provided many details on the new agreement. It would make sense, considering that it was facing losing a lot of subscribers to other channels.

G/O Media might get a commission.

The fight was about money. Disney was told to treat YouTube TV the same as any other TV provider and give it the same rates. Disney wanted to reach a fair, market-based agreement.

Disney told Gizmodo on Sunday that it appreciated the fair terms that were agreed to by the two companies.

Disney said it was thrilled that its lineup of live sports and news plus kids, family and general entertainment programming is in the process of being restored to YouTube TV subscribers across the country.

The terms of the deal were not mentioned in a post by YouTube. The statement did not mention the phrase "equitable agreement", which it had emphasized in previous communications.

We apologized for the disruption and appreciated your patience as we continued to negotiate on your behalf, said the video sharing website. Disney is willing to work towards an agreement.

Some subscribers may have trouble finding Disney content in their live guides. In this case, affected users are advised to search and add their favorite Disney channels back to the guide. Not all local ABC News stations are back up yet, although YouTube says it is working on it and that they should be accessible soon.

The clear winners here are YouTube TV subscribers, regardless of whether or not Disney got the better deal. They only lost Disney content for one day, and they don't have to go shopping for another streaming service that has the content they want.
