The NHL and NHL Players' Association agreed on Sunday to continue the season despite the issues surrounding the league and announced a number of makeup dates for postponed cross-border games in December.

The statement said that an announcement on the potential participation of NHL players in the Beijing Games will be forthcoming, which could mean that the Winter Games will be devoid of NHL athletes.
The Olympics for NHL players are now in serious jeopardy.

The NHL would have taken a break in February for the Olympics tournament, but the Winter Games may cause the league to have a difficult schedule, which would be alleviated by not taking that break.
The NHL has until January 10 to withdraw from the Olympics.
Kaplan said that the NHL and NHLPA are hopeful that they will be able to avoid a full schedule pause due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the new Omicron variant.
The league introduced stricter coronaviruses protocols on Saturday, including daily testing through Jan. 1 and the possibility of additional game day testing.
The NHL and NHL Players' Association have agreed that all clubs will be required to follow enhanced preventative and detection measures in the wake of the recent increase in positive cases.

The league has already postponed 20 games because 70 players were in the COVID-19 protocols. The Colorado Avalanche, Florida panthers and the Flames have had their games postponed.
The NHL's vaccine participation has been high, with only the Detroit Red Wings' Tyler Bertuzzi remaining unvaccinated.
