The Helen Rollason Award was presented to Jen Beattie at the Sports Personality of the Year.
After discovering a lump in her breast, Beattie was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2020, but continued to play for club and country.
She uses her platform to encourage others to get screened after being cancer-free.
The Helen Rollason award was a huge honor.
She said that getting told you have cancer is a life-changing moment.
It was horrible, especially in the middle of a Pandemic when you don't have your friends and family with you.
She said it was the best feeling to be able to say "cancer free".
She was presented with her award by her teammate. She was unable to attend the Sports Personality show due to her commitments with the Women's Super League.
John Beattie said that his daughter receiving the award was the most important moment in her life.
She wanted it to be about making sure she saved some lives, even though you can always be good at kicking a ball.
Getting checked is one of the most important things. If you feel something is out of the norm, get checked.
It saved my life.
The Helen Rollason Award was introduced to the show in 1999 in memory of the journalist who died of cancer at the age of 43.
The award was won by Captain Sir Tom Moore. Scottish rugby union great Doddie Weir has motor neurone disease, Anne Williams is a disaster campaigner and Billy Monger is a racing driver.
