The passenger was stuck between Scylla and Charybdis.
There were no flights out of EWR tonight because of the delayed United flight out of Punta Cana. They gave blankets and pillows at 6am. We paid for the cab back to EWR after sleeping for 2 hours. United, do better.

It is easy to be angry at an airline on social media. Unless you get a lot of attention from your post, it is not likely to get you much. It's better to own the situation yourself. There are 9 ways to make sure this doesn't happen to you.
If you want to be rebooked on a later flight, please tell us. It's 6.am and you're on your way to your vacation, but is 2 hours of sleep or sleeping at the airport enjoyable?
You can book a hotel closer to home. I completely understand that this can be prohibitive for some, but it can also be expensive, and you may even test positive for Covidally if you don't know it, and have several extra days of lodging on the back end. The room the airline will give you is probably not something you want.
Shout out to American Airlines! We didn't make it home because we missed our connection. They put us in a 3 star hotel so we could sleep with roaches. Thank you a lot AA!

If you use a credit card that pays for the tickets, you should book your own room, save the receipts for the meals and transportation, and pay attention to what credit card you use.
Choose your connections carefully. If a delay will cause problems for your trip, then you should avoid the New York airspace with short or normal connections where a delay is going to prevent you from making it to your destination. You should not connect to the last flight of the night. If you have backup itinerary options in mind, they can sell out.
If you want to save money on last-minute trips, try to get a new ticket on another airline. Consider the cost of buying a new itinerary and paying for it with a refund of your original ticket, compared to the cost of overnighting options you face.
Do your own research before you accept a flight from the airline. Even if you don't know how to use tools to find inventory, you can still find flights for sale and purchase them when there is a delay or cancellation.
Keep checking for something better as inventory changes all the time. If the flight you want is sold out, keep refreshing your options.
Ask someone else for help. If the person helping you isn't giving you what you want, call or use online chat and find someone to help you.
I've made some big mistakes in my travels, like booking a hotel for the wrong month and showing up at the wrong hotel because I know where I stay near the Miami airport every single time. I've never booked a ticket to the wrong city.

Things don't go as planned when you travel. When there are mechanical delays or flight diversions, I prefer to take the delay rather than push forward. When things go wrong, airlines should communicate better. However it is...

I'm not sure how interesting this story is, but a couple of people asked me to share it on social media. Sharing how I think about dealing with travel when it goes wrong could be useful. There's not much going on.
