Some of the players at the first major halo Infinite tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina are forced to play on the xbox series X development kit because Microsoft is having trouble procuring the consoles. Game development kits are used by developers to create games and are not usually available to the public.
You'll be playing on Series X this weekend. They look a little different, but they are functionally the same and will be in Retail mode.

Why? There is a global supply chain shortage.

Some players will have to play on Xbox Series X development kits instead of the real thing, as a result of a message from the lead of 343 Industries. He notes that the kits are identical and will operate in retail mode. The hardware will look a lot different than the standard console, but players will still get the same experience. The global supply chain shortage is a real reason for the use of development kits.
The chip shortage has made it hard to find everything from PC parts to gaming consoles. Phil Spencer said that supply chain constraints could last into next year. It has gotten so bad that even Apple's senior vice president of services can't seem to get his hands on a new console from Microsoft. The account that posts about the restocks of the console is called "@XboxStockAlerts" and it proves that even the highest of connections can't guarantee you access to the console.
