Sen. Joe Manchin says he won't vote for Biden's social spending bill, dooming it: 'I can't get there'

The centerpiece of the president's economic agenda was effectively killed by Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who stated his opposition to the sweeping legislation.

"If I can't explain it to the people of West Virginia, I can't vote for it," he said. I can't get there, I've tried everything.

The Recount is on December 19, 2021.

He said that this legislation was not a good one. I've tried everything I know to do.

The plan needs the support of all 50 Senate Democrats to pass the chamber. The social and climate legislation is effectively dead because of the conservative Democrat's opposition.

Manchin has urged Democrats to take a "strategic pause" since August because of a number of reasons. Inflation is at the top of his list.

"We've done everything that we can to help people, and we've been given $5.4 trillion in emergency federal spending to fight the Pandemic," Manchin told Insider earlier this month.

Progressives expressed outrage on Sunday. The legislation should be brought to the Senate floor, according to Sen.

"Let Mr. Manchin explain to the people of West Virginia why he doesn't have the guts to stand up to the powerful special interests," he said.
