Sen. Joe Manchin says he won’t vote for Biden’s Build Back Better Act, potentially killing the social and climate bill

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is holding a hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., on October 21, 2021.

Manchin said he wouldn't support the Biden administration's plan.

The social spending and climate policy bill is likely to be killed by Manchin. Democrats need Manchin's vote in the Senate, as well as a tie-breaker from Harris.

I can't vote for it if I can't explain it to the people of West Virginia. I can't vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I can not. I have tried everything. Manchin said on "Fox News Sunday" that he was concerned about adding to the national debt.

A White House spokesman did not respond to the request for comment. NBC News reported that talks between Biden and Machin had been going badly and they were far apart on the proposal. Manchin informed the White House and other Democratic leaders of his decision before he made his public announcement, according to NBC News.

The legislation was viewed by several Democratic lawmakers as the key to boosting working families and showing voters they can govern. The enhanced child tax credit led to decreased confidence among some legislators.

Immediate impacts will be caused by the failure to pass the plan in 2021. The child tax credit of up to $300 a month per child will be cut off at the end of the year if Congress does not extend it. The last payments to families went out on Wednesday, and the Build Back Better Act would keep them going for a year.

There has been a renewed surge of Covid-19 cases and the highly contagious omicron variant. The rise in cases is forcing some to return to shutdowns. The bill would provide financial support to families.

The midterms could be affected by a failure to act. Democrats are trying to show voters that they are moving in the right direction as Republicans are favored to regain control of the House.

After Manchin threw cold water on the bill, Sen.Bernie sanders still called for a vote on the legislation. Manchin needs to explain why he doesn't have the guts to stand up to special interest groups for working families, according to CNN's "State of the Union."
