Frank Gore and Deron Williams made their professional boxing debuts on Saturday night.
They were candid about their reasons for agreeing to the fight.
I decided to fight because of my football decisions. Gore has been in the boxing ring for more than a decade.
I wanted to see where I'm at if I wasn't going to play football.
Williams, a three-time NBA All-Star and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, shared his rationale for entering the ring.
"I've been training for a long time in boxing and stand-up," Williams said. I've sparred against bigger guys in the UFC and smaller guys in other sports.
Gore is a Miami native and the Florida crowd favored him.
Williams looked a bit more aggressive than Gore in the first round.
Gore replicated the tone set by Williams in the second round, but it appeared that the momentum might shift when Williams pushed Gore out of the ring with just under a minute remaining. The former football player pushed Williams as he responded to his opponent.
The fight continued through the last two rounds. Williams was declared the winner via split decision, but he said he was done with boxing after that fight.
Gore didn't end his boxing career quickly. When asked if this would be his only fight, he said, "We'll see." I had fun.
The peers of the combatant's, including DeMar DeRozan,Isaiah Thomas and Marlon Humphrey, watched the fight and commented on the results.
