Netflix's The House Offers Up Stop Motion Scares

Houses can be scary no matter what age you are, especially in the period when you are just getting used to living there. It makes the setting a fertile ground for horror, as evidenced by films like the original Conjuring or Amityville Horror. The House is an upcoming animated horror series that wants to explore this terror through a trio of different stories.

The stop-motion anthology will show people moving into a single home and finding that things are off. The inhabitants of the house are at risk of being eaten by bugs or baby things in the shadows, if not put in physical harm, because the house threatens to consume them and drive them mad if not put them in physical harm entirely. It has been described as an eccentric dark comedy, but maybe they are hiding the laughs behind the dancing roaches.

The directors are all experienced stop motion filmmakers. Chapter One is about a 19th century family looking to restore their family names, and Chapter Two is about a property developer in the present day who finds the home has unexpected guests. The cast is made up of a lot of stars, including Matthew Goode, Susan Wokoma, and Jarvis Cocker.

It isn't every day that you see horror and animation in stop motion. It is possible that the last thing you saw to hit this niche was Paranorman nearly a decade ago. The House will premiere on January 14, 2022.
