'Hawkeye' directors reveal Florence Pugh insisted on eating hot sauce for several takes while improvising the mac-and-cheese scene with Hailee Steinfeld

The fifth episode of the first season of "Hawkeye" features Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh.

There are major revelations in the fifth episode of the show.

The dinner scene with Kate and Yelena came together thanks to the directing duo.

The idea to put hot sauce on pasta came from Florence Pugh, according to the directors.

The directors of "Hawkeye" have revealed how Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova improvised their mac-and-cheese dinner scene in the latest episode.

Fans who watched Wednesday's episode probably noticed that Yelena's meal choice was a reference to her younger self telling her mom she wanted mac-and-cheese for dinner.

The directors said that the Easter egg was part of the scene from the beginning.

"A lot of the time our jobs are made easy because we have incredible writers on these shows and that's something that was in there, that they would sit down and have this conversation," he told Insider in an interview on Thursday.

The director said that sometimes they find themselves playing catch up on all the smallest details, but they always make the connections because they live with the characters.

"That had to be in there, of course," he said. The new layer that we brought was that it became such a focus of that scene and there was a lot of improv.

Since "Black Widow," Yelena Belova has been eating mac-and-cheese.

In the fourth episode of the series, Yelena and archer Kate met for the first time, during a rooftop fight scene between Clint Barton and Maya Lopez.

The sister of Black Widow visited New York under orders to kill Clint. On this week's episode, Yelena shows up at Kate's apartment without being seen by anyone.

Kate throws a bottle of hot sauce at Yelena, who catches it and gives a cheerful "Hello!" when she sees him.

"We were looking for something that we knew Kate was going to throw, and the hot sauce was really catchable," said Bertie.

Yelena puts the sauce on her mac-and-cheese because she likes it.

The directors said that the character's decision was the brainchild of the actress, and she ate the meal during the multiple takes.

"Florence was like, 'Well, hot sauce has to go on the mac-and-cheese,'" said Bertie. I'm like, 'That's a big choice, because you have to eat that for multiple takes.' She said, 'I'm in, I'm in it.' And she did that.

Steinfeld is not as fond of hot sauce as Pugh is. That was incorporated into the dialogue.

Yelena confirms that Kate can add hot sauce to the macaroni while the two eat it.

In another part of the scene, Yelena searches for forks to split the meal. Kate replied "I'm one person" when she only found a single utensil.

Yelena scolds Kate for grabbing a plastic fork that she found, and tells her that it's not cutlery.

The moment was the result of only finding one fork, because all the props had been set up. We were trying to find another fork.

The stars couldn't share a fork because of COVID-19, so the plastic one was used.

Kate Bishop only has one fork.

The stars are well-known in Hollywood.

Steinfeld was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "True Grit". She is known for her work in films like "Little Women"

"They're young," he said of the stars. They're incredible actors of their generation.

There was "relief" in being given the chance to direct two talented actors who could just sit at a dining table and hold viewers' attention.

You are gripped by the magic that happens because of the long scene. There's not a moment when you're like, 'I'm going to go to the toilet'. You want to see what happens to them.

They hadn't worked together before that scene. "But their characters met on this kind of equal footing and that's sometimes when chemistry happens because they're so generous and they're giving each other so much that they can stay in that moment."
