The NHL enhanced its COVID-19 protocols as cases continue to rise. There is a time and a place.

The NHL announced Friday that Saturday's game between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens has been postponed.

There is no makeup date for the game.

Quebec public health officials requested that no fans attend the Montreal game because of the rising cases of Covid-19, and the team played in front of an empty arena.

Jonathan Drouin said that today was a wake-up call. We weren't expecting to see fans in the stands with the vaccines. It's difficult to see that again without the fans' energy. Health and safety is more important than watching a hockey game.

The Bell Centre will be able to accommodate partial capacity in January, according to the Canadiens.

The Bruins were without seven players because of the COVID-19 protocol for Thursday night's loss to the New York Islanders. They played a man down with 11 forwards and six defenders. Bruce Cassidy rejoined the team Monday after testing positive for a drug.

More than 140 NHL players have been on the protocol list this season, and the league has noted that all but one of its 700 players are considered fully vaccine free.

The next game for Montreal is at the Islanders. The Bruins will face the Senators.
