The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said on Friday that the Biden Administration is open to discussion about what it means to be fully vaccineed against Covid-19.

Fauci told CNBC that regulators have not ruled out changing the number of doses needed to be fully vaccineed.

He is unsure when a change will be made.

Fauci and the Biden Administration want people who have already been fully vaccined to get a booster dose.

Two weeks after the second shot in a two-dose series, like Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, a single-dose vaccine, like the J&J vaccine, means full vaccination status.

According to the CDC, more than 50 million people in the US have been given a booster dose of the vaccine.

Fauci said that people should not lose sight of the fact that if they want to be protected, they should get their booster.

There is a lot of uncertainty about how the heavily-mutated variant affects vaccine effectiveness. Fauci said Wednesday that there is no need for a specific vaccine for omicron as existing boosters provide enough protection. He urged those who are eligible to get a booster shot.
Fauci says a redefinition is on the table.
