America's wealthiest pastor avoided paying more than $150,000 in annual taxes on his $7 million Texas mansion, according to the Houston Chronicle.

A six-bedroom mansion was built by Kenneth Copeland, a famous televangelist who founded Eagle Mountain International Church.

According to the Chronicle, Copeland is worth $750 million and has several properties and private jets. The jets are located at the airport named after him.

Texas law gives pastor's homes a 100% exemption from property tax.

Even though the law was not intended to cover super-rich religious figures like him, local authorities said that the house was within his rights to claim.

Jeff Law, Tarrant County's chief appraiser, told the Chronicle that it looks out of place and unusual.

"From what I can gather through the law, and my understanding, it qualifies as a parsonage, just like the little house next to the church would."

The Chronicle said that in a 2015 sermon, the man said God told him to build a house for his wife. He said that God told him that it was part of his prosperity.

The exemption only applies to parsonages that are one acre in size.

The property is on its own plot, but it is surrounded by 24 acres of lakefront.

The Chronicle said it attracts an annual tax bill of $3,000.

Pete Evans, president of the Trinity Foundation, a nonprofit focused on transparency in religious organizations, told the Chronicle that the law was never intended to give breaks to millionaires.

Lawrence Swicegood, a spokesman for Eagle Mountain International Church, told the Chronicle that the institution always abides by biblical guidelines. Our church abides by the various codes, statutes and ordinances of the various states and counties.

The value of the mansion was set by the local district at $10.8 million in 2020, but the church protested and it was lowered to $7 million in 2021.
