At Least 19 Dead After Fire Breaks Out In Japanese Clinic, Police Suspect Arson

A fire that broke out in a mental health clinic in a multi-story office building in the Japanese city of Osaka on Friday left at least 19 people dead and several others critically injured.

Rescuers pulled out 28 people from the building of which 27 showed no signs of life, according to NHK.

A fire broke out in a medical clinic which specializes in psychosomatic medicine and psychiatry and is located on the fourth floor of an eight-story multi-tenant building.

Police sources told the public broadcaster that a man in his 60s was seen inside the clinic holding a paper bag with liquid leaking from it.

Police are investigating if the suspected arsonist was among the injured in the fire.

The Prime Minister of Japan offered his sympathies and said that authorities are trying to determine the cause of the fire.

36 people were killed in a fire at an animation studio in Kyoto, Japan, in 2019. The attacker entered the studio through the front door carrying 40 liters of petrol, which he used to douse the area and several studio employees before setting it ablaze. In 2001, 44 people were killed in a fire in a commercial establishment in Tokyo. The building, Myojo 56, was suspected of being set on fire by an Arsonist but no one was ever arrested.
