Alan Smith on Arsenal strikers: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette futures plus next striker 'big call'

Sky Sports' Alan Smith looks at the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah, and Alexandre Lacazette, as well as who could be the next star strikers.

The captaincy of the club was stripped from him earlier this week after he missed out on the win over Saints.

Arteta said that there were no more updates on the player during the victory against West Ham.

Although goals have not been an issue for the club, there seems to be an opening for a new forward.

Smith covers the futures of the current forwards and who could be the next in at the club, including a possible target in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

A difficult road back for the man.

The captaincy was stripped from the player recently.

It looks like it will be difficult to get back to where he was.

Arteta has done what he has to do to the captain of the club, and it's right.

You wonder what the future holds for him. It didn't seem like he was confident on the pitch.

I think Arteta would like to sell him, but he's going to be hard to move on unless they do what they did with Mesut.

It's a problem and a problem Arteta didn't need, but now it's a big challenge for the club to rebuild their attack, and it will depend on some very clever and inspired recruitment.

Was the rebuild of the attack coming anyway despite the Auba news?

The highlights from the win over West Ham are free to watch.

Yes. For a while, the case has been that Aubameyang wasn't producing. It's not like it's been a blip over the course of the games. He hasn't looked himself in a while.

Lacazette looks like he's going to be leaving the club and it's time for the club to look at some younger talent.

The strikers in the squad need to be filled, no matter what happens with Aubameyang and the other strikers.

They are very busy in the recruitment department, analysts and others are looking at the world to see what is out there.

I think that the recruitment department at the club seems to be more efficient now and more successful than it has been in the past. Ben White has come into his own, albeit for £50m, but the other guys were relatively cheap and seem to be buying better in general.

It's difficult to get a good price for a strikers because everyone is after that next one at a decent price, so they will have to be very careful in the transfer market.

Will Auba's future be resolved in January?

Mikel Arteta was happy with the attitude of his players in the 2-0 win over West Ham and says that the removal of the captaincy did not distract them.

It's going to be difficult. Not many clubs have the kind of money that would be needed for his wages, and especially for a player who is not hitting the back of the net.

Why would you take a chance on someone who is not producing at the moment and is not paying big money? It is going to be difficult.

Arteta will want to get him back into the team, and I think he has to try and do that.

He didn't have any man-management skills when he was a player, so he needs to improve them now that he's a manager.

He has to show a talent for bringing someone back into the fold, making him feel wanted and explaining his reasons for dropping him, but still saying we value you as a player.

I've never seen him as a captain, but it's a bit embarrassing for him. I wonder if he's ever seen himself as a leader. It might be a little bit of a relief, but he can just concentrate on finding form.

Arteta is going to have to be around the shoulder time to try and get him back on side.

What type of player do you think the club needs?

Emile Smith Rowe and the other strikers bring creativity.

A good one!

You want someone who can operate through the middle on his own, someone who can hold the ball up and work the channels, and someone who is fast.

Arteta has settled into a style and system which involves a strikers playing on his own through the middle and operating in front of a No 10.

Let's hope that young talent can make a good choice, especially since there will be some out there.

If you can't put the ball in the back of the net at the end of the game, you are going to struggle.

It's a big call for the team. It's a big moment in Arteta's management at the club and it will be a big factor in where he goes from here.

Is the creative players in the squad a help in signing a new player? Does it appeal to someone?

The leadership group will share the captaincy after the decision to remove Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the role.

If you are confident that your teammate will see your run and try and find it, that will give you more confidence to make those runs.

If you feel like it is dull and lifeless behind you, you are going to lose a bit of enthusiasm, but if you want to be on the end of good passes, you have to be at the club.

It's a plus point if you can bring someone in for that important position.

A big moment for Arteta and the owners.

In January, Edu will be tasked with adding to the squad.

It's going to be a gamble because you are buying potential. Maybe it's an educated guess. You don't know when to bring someone in, in any position.

You are probably asking a young player to make a big step up to the premier league, but I think Arteta would back his own ability to coach and improve that player, that young player you'd imagine coming in and trying to acclimatise to what is required.

It's about getting someone who can develop into a top-class forward and having those raw ingredients in a player.

I don't think Arteta will be a ready-made player when he arrives, but I think he will be a good coach.

Sometimes his managerial abilities have been questioned but I think he's gaining confidence in that direction all the time. We've seen that with his decisiveness.

It will be fascinating to see who they go for in the end.

There's a lot of talk about Dominic, but he won't come cheap. I don't know if they have that kind of money.

What about what is inside the club at the moment?

Could Gabriel Martinelli be the first choice for the club?

There's more to come from Gabriel Martinelli.

He had a difficult spell over the last year or so. He has come back into the fold after an injury and playing someone like that on the left is a way of bringing them back into the team.

The main goal threat is not much of a responsibility.

He was a revelation when he burst onto the scene, but we will have to wait and see if he becomes a central strikers. He scored at the end of the game at the end of the half-length pitch.

There's a big talent in there, and that should not be ignored or discarded. I'm sure it won't be.

I don't know who Eddie Nketiah is. He's always struck me as a poacher-type forward.

He's still young, though, and it's not certain if he can lead the line week in, week out. Is his game good enough for that? I don't think it is. He might end up being one of the players you sell, and he might even score a few goals.

It is not an easy situation for him with his contract. They need one, but maybe two in the future.

Could Lacazette get a new deal? Is it time to move on from him as well?

It's possible that Alexandre Lacazette is also on his way out at the club.

I don't think they would give Lacazette a three-year contract if they did give her a contract.

It will depend on what they are confident in. They are confident of bringing him in, maybe they have earmarked someone. They may be able to let Lacazette go.

You don't want to be saddled with a player that is past his best and on good money.

They will have to think long and hard about it.

What about the woman? Is a loan deal the right move for him?

I think a loan move is the right move for Balogun.

If he could go to a team in the premier league and get regular football, that would aid his development, as we don't see him very often.

The step up from youth and reserve team football is very big and Championship football would be good for him at this stage.

It looks like Arteta doesn't feel he's ready yet, so a loan move would probably be a help to him. They can get something sorted for him in January.

Would Dominic Calvert-Lewin's physical style be good at the club? Will it be a pacier scorer?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move to the north London club.

I don't think that Calvert-Lewin is an ideal fit for the team. He's an old-fashioned centre-forward and he likes to get his head to the ball and attack it.

That's not the game of the team. It can be when they get the full-backs forward, and you can imagine the crosses that will be thrown towards him.

He's not what I would think of as a centre-forward at the moment, but look at how well he did over the course of his career at the club. You adjust based on the player you have up top.

There's more to come from the young man and maybe we haven't seen everything he can do. He might have that in his game if he's asked to do different things, like be more intricate in his build-up play.

He explains how he has developed his game to add more goals.

He's not the fastest centre-forward around, but he's not slow.

He's not the kind of centre-forward that I would think of when it came to Arteta's top scorer, but I know he is someone they are considering, looking at and wondering if they can get hold of him.

I would have thought that he would be looked at by the club, but are they looking at him? I don't think Steven Gerrard would let him go in a hurry.

That kind of mobile central strikers that will really threaten behind defenders, is a bit more like that.

A centre-forward is a focal point. Lacazette has been really useful to the team and could be in that situation as well.

Is it worth it to get a proven premier leaguer over potential from Europe?

Alan Smith says that Dusan Vlahovic could be a potential target.

It's a big deal to get a proven premier league forward. Is that kind of cash available to the club?

If they spent more than $65m it stops them from bolstering other areas of the team in the transfer market. They'd be putting their eggs in a basket.

I think they'd go down the road of a younger player from Europe.

Someone like Dusan Vlahovic could fit the bill.

I'm sure the analysis team atArsenal are looking at all the statistics to see who would be suitable and maybe a little bit cheaper as well.

A lot of clubs are after that type of forward so let's hope the club can be clever and quick in the transfer market. They will need to be.

Final thoughts...

I could see Lacazette leaving if they get a target. Arteta has had enough time to evaluate Nketiah and maybe he hasn't done enough.

If you lose two strikers and you can't get a replacement in, then you're not going to discard players.

It's difficult to do this type of business in January.

I think it's a good guess that this was all planned for the summer, unless they feel they've been forced into action. I think this will wait for the summer.
