'Monster' sentenced to 90 years in prison for attacking 9-year-old girl

James Brian Chadwell II was sentenced to 90 years in prison for the assault of a 9-year-old girl in Tippecanoe County Superior Court 2. Chadwell plead guilty to attempted murder, two counts of child molesting, kidnapping, criminal confinement, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and strangulation of the 9-year-old girl.

Tippecanoe Superior 2 Judge Steven Meyer described James Brian Chadwell II as a monster and sentenced him to 90 years in prison.

Meyer said that everyone is afraid of what monster might be living next door.

Your criminal history is terrible. How can you be sure that you live in a peaceful community? Meyer said rhetorically.

The monster nodded and looked down.

The self- confessed child molester and attempted murderer will have to serve 71 years before he is eligible for release. If he lives that long, Chadwell will be 114 years old and the year will be 204.

Chadwell will never see freedom again and can never hurt another girl like he did on April 19 when he attacked the girl.

He took the child to the basement where Chadwell began sexually abusing her.

"This case is the worst nightmare for a parent," Starbuck said in her arguments.

Meyer said he was struck by the seriousness. A little girl came to Mr. Chadwell's door and asked to pet a dog. Such a nice gesture.

You let her into your house and immediately attacked her.

But Chadwell's callousness got worse.

The monster stopped his sexual assault, locked the girl in his basement, and went outside to see the girl's grandmother.

"He consoles the grandmother, rubs her shoulder and tells her it's going to be okay," Starbuck said.

She was young. Meyer read a portion of the grandmother's letter to the court.

Meyer commented on the grandmother's comments.

The monster went back to his home at 714 Park Ave. to continue his attacks on the girl.

He told the officers that the girl came over and petted his dog, then headed off in a specific direction.

"Should I get dressed and come and look for her?" Chadwell asked as he saw officers discussing the search near his house.

The officers knocked on his door again ten minutes after their first contact, but he didn't reply. Fifteen minutes after their second visit to Chadwell's door, officers knocked again, and he answered.

Starbuck said that his television was playing a horror show.

The real horror was in the basement.

The girl, who was naked and bloody, was found in the basement of Chadwell's house. She was hospitalized on her 10th birthday.

Meyer was asked to sentence Chadwell to 155 years in prison. The attorney for Chadwell asked for 56 years with 54 years to be served in prison.

Chadwell was sentenced to 40 years for attempted murder and 20 years for being an "habitual" criminal.

30 years for child molesting is the same as the 60 years. Chadwell was sentenced to 30 years for the conviction of attempted child molesting, but it will be served concurrently with the child molesting sentence.

Chadwell will serve 45 years for the attempted murder and the habitual sentence. He will serve 26 years for molesting a child.

Chadwell was not sentenced for battery, strangulation, kidnapping and criminal confinement because of double jeopardy issues.

Chadwell made a few statements before he was sentenced, acknowledging his horrible actions, but he did not know where his behavior came from.

This is not who I am. He said that it was not who he was raised to be. I didn't want to hurt a little girl.

He said he was sorry and that he was glad his victim had family support to help her recover from the wounds he inflicted on her.

Chadwell said he wouldn't appeal his sentence.
