It was the second outing since coach Mikel Arteta removed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as captain over what the club described as "his latest discipline violation."

When Granit Xhaka was stripped of the responsibility after a confrontation with fans during a game in November, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was named as the new captain.
One of their most convincing performances of the season was recorded by the side under the leadership of Alexandre Lacazette. The French forward failed to convert a penalty with that elastic albatross around his bicep.
Arteta said that Lacazette is the next in line and that he is happy with the way he played.
Even if the club decides to make Lacazette their new captain on a full-time basis, they may once again be looking for a new one as they don't seem overly rushed in extending the 29-year-old's contract.
It is par for the course to be searching for a new player to name as their captain. Things started to head south when Henry took over the captaincy from Patrick Vieira.

With Gallas stripped of the captaincy after his sit-in, Cesc took over. The writing was on the wall when his Spain teammates pranked him by pulling a Barcelona shirt over his head during their 2010 World Cup celebrations. The following year, he returned to his club.
The year was 2011-12.
The captaincy left by Cesc for the 2011-12 season was taken over by Robin van Persie, who immediately scored a bucket-load of goals and won the title for Manchester United.

The Belgian defender's tenure was cut short by a series of injuries, though he was expected to take the captain's role. He joined Barcelona in a big way.
Mikel Arteta was killed in the line of duty.
In his first year as captain, Arteta made six league starts, but only one in his second, before succumbing to injury. The captaincy has continued to cause problems for him, even after he returned to manage the club.
Mertesacker: 2016-18.
Mertesacker was made captain and the injury bug continued into the next two years. The big German defender was restricted to just four league starts over the course of his two seasons with the armband, although he did end on a high with an FA Cup win before retiring.
