Emma Zaks had a stroke at the age of 33.

She was discharged a few times before doctors realized her vision and stomach issues were related.

She said it took years to find a surgeon who could correct her eye.

Emma Zaks woke up with double vision after she went to bed with stomach issues. She taught 18 classes a week. Health scares were not on her mind.

When she looked in the mirror, her right eye pointed forward and her left eye turned outward. The only way she could see straight was by closing her eyes.

Zaks spoke about it on the Pregnantish podcast.

She went to the emergency room right away, but it took two more weeks in and out of the hospital, lots of tests, and an exploratory surgery for a doctor to finally put together what was wrong: She had a rare autoimmune disease that had caused both the stomach pains and a mini-

Two doctors told her she wouldn't see straight again, but Zaks kept researching and seeking more opinions, which led to a successful surgery over a year later.

She's speaking up about her experience to encourage others to advocate for themselves in a healthcare system.

Zaks was discharged twice before she was taken to the hospital.

Zaks once had to leave mid-soul-cycle class and call an ambulance to the ER because of stomach pains that were so bad she had to throw up. She wrote for Style of Sport about the time she underwent a number of scans that came back negative. She was sent home after a few days.

I wish I had pressed harder for more answers, but who was I to question the doctors? She wanted to be a good patient and hated confrontation.

She woke up with a lazy eye and went back to the ER. She was discharged with steroids. The spinal tap and magnetic resonance image had come back clean.

Zaks went to the ER once again because he couldn't stop vomiting. A doctor said that an exploratory surgery had found an "intestine that hadn't seen oxygen in years." The issue was solved by removing part of it, but she didn't know why it happened or what was wrong with her eye.

She wrote that she was being treated for two separate ailments.

A doctor diagnosed her with polyangiitis after putting the two together. The condition can cause problems with blood vessels. It caused swelling in the brain and constriction of the intestines for Zaks.

It took about a year for her to find a doctor who could fix her vision after she was treated with a drug. The eye muscle is sewed to the wall of the eye during strabismus surgery.

Zaks said on Pregnantish that if he had listened to the initial diagnosis and initial prognosis, he would still be wearing an eye patch.

Young women can have strokes. Insider previously reported that Brittany Scheier, a lawyer who had a stroke at the age of 27, had her symptoms brushed off in the ER as drug or alcohol related.

Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, an American Heart Association Go Red for Women volunteer medical expert and cardiologist in New York City, previously told Insider it's critical for women to advocate for themselves.

"So many times I hear, 'I was listening to the doctor.' "Maybe they're right,'" she said. No one knows our bodies as well as we do. Nobody is living in our bodies. We know when we're not doing well.
