Apple has not offered a consumer-oriented external display since the Thunderbolt display was discontinued. The Pro Display XDR costs $4,999 and is aimed at professionals.
There are rumors that Apple is developing two new displays that are more suitable for everyday users. There is a new version of the Pro Display XDR with an Apple chip in the works.
We've rounded up everything we've heard about Apple's future display lineup so far.
There were early rumors.
Mark Gurman was the first to report that Apple had begun development of a lower-priced external display. Gurman said the display would be geared towards consumers and would have a lower contrast ratio than the Pro Display XDR.
In July of 2021, 9to5Mac's Filipe Espsito reported that Apple was testing a new external display with an A13 chip, and that it would likely be a new Pro Display XDR. The report said that the chip could help a Mac achieve better performance when connected to the display and/or enable some dedicated features.
The display is 24 inches.
The leaker said that the new displays would have the same specifications as the iMac and the upcoming iMac. He believes that the displays currently have un branded enclosures will likely end up being Apple branded.
One of the displays will be based on the current iMac, which has the following specifications:
The display has a resolution of 44802520.
500 nits of brightness.
There is support for 1 billion colors.
There is support for the wide color gamut.
The True Tone technology adjusts the white balance of the display to match the color temperature of the light around you for a more natural viewing experience.
The display won't have mini-LED backlighting or a variable refresh rate, like the iMac, meaning it won't have increased brightness for content like high Dynamic Range or smooth scrolling.
The price of a 24 inch display without any of the computer related components is likely to be less than the iMac's price in the US.
The display is 27 inches.
The larger iMac will be based on the rumored Apple Silicon version. The leaker said the display should feature ProMotion because it has mini-LED backlighting and a 120Hz refresh rate.
Ross Young, a display industry analyst, said this week that Apple is planning to release a new iMac with a mini-LED display and ProMotion in the first half of 2022, so rumors are aligning for these products.
Since the upcoming iMac has yet to be released, we don't have complete specifications for the 27 inch display.
The iMac starts at $1,799 in the US.
The new Pro display is called the XDR.
The Pro Display XDR is likely to be a new version of a 32-inch display that is being worked on by the company. The leaker said that the display will have support for ProMotion.
The new Pro Display XDR is likely to be priced around $4,999.
Release time frame
Rumors have yet to provide a release time for the new Apple displays, but the company is still at an " early development" stage.
