A Japanese billionaire who spent tens of millions of dollars on a trip to the International Space Station doesn't care that his vacation is only accessible because of his wealth.
In an interview with the Associated Press, fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa mused that those who criticize are perhaps those who have never been to space.
He admitted to the AP that it's still rather expensive, but it's not only about money. Training for emergencies takes at least a few months and it takes time for your body to adjust. It is only accessible to those who have time and can afford it.
Maezawa said that they don't know if that will be the case in 10 years or 20 years' time.
Maezawa and his assistant Yozo Hirano became the first space tourists to enter the International Space Station in five years last week. The billionaire's quest to go to space led to a canceled reality show and a pact with SpaceX to send eight other lucky people on a trip around the Moon on their dime.
It is not clear why, how much, to whom, or when the billionaire will give away his wealth while he is in space, but he did say that he would give it away.
Maezawa told the AP that he has had difficulty sleeping and experienced motion sickness since entering space, as he is thrilled to be a part of the 1% of people who can afford to send themselves and their friends to space.
The billionaire is getting over the motion sickness so he can enjoy the remaining days.
He said that he would be returning on the 20th. I want to have sushi when I return.
Wouldn't we like to have what he's having?
