Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan fixed his biggest mistake; he can't afford to make another one

The Jacksonville Jags.

The first season with the Jaguars was tumultuous for Urban Meyer.

The decision to let go of Urban Meyer was made by the Jags. The song is called "1:56."

It was true that Shad Khan got it right.

It was eight months later than he thought.

The owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars had to fire Urban Meyer less than a year after hiring him. Not because of too many losses, but rather a long list of embarrassing gaffes with players, coaches, and a woman in a bar. They kept piling up and left Khan with no choice.

Urban Meyer was fired as Jacksonville's coach after he went 2-11 in his first year.

It was embarrassing for Khan because he was enamored with Meyer after watching his Ohio State teams play in the Big Ten.

He believed that Meyer was going to lead with the help of the No. 1 overall pick, quarterback, and a franchise resurgence. At a news conference introducing Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne Jr., Khan proudly proclaimed: "This time I got it right."

He didn't.

Since making the playoffs in 2007, the Jags have been a laughingstock of the league. They have lost at least 10 games in 10 of the last 11 seasons, including nine double-digit losing seasons in Khan's 10 years as owner. Their only winning season since '07 came in the year of 2017: the Jacksonville defense rode an elite defense to an AFC South title and a surprising run to the playoffs.

The year has been worse because of Meyer.

From a lunch man to a football player.

The DAL has had some of the best records in history.

The valedictorian of the Jets was Berrios.

The 'first-round bust' label is something thatPenny wants to get rid of.

The Eagles are favorites for the last playoff spot.

He bungled things from the beginning, beginning with the hiring of Chris Doyle, who was accused of making racist remarks and bully Black players while at Iowa.

Meyer was fined by the league for having improper contact practices.

Khan had no choice but to fire Meyer because of the embarrassment and the fact that the Jags were just 2-11.

He is faced with making the most important hire in franchise history. The quarterback is the most important piece in any rebuild. Khan has to find a coach that will build around him, hire the right coach to bring in the offensive system that fits him best, and create the culture that Meyer promised but spectacularly failed to deliver.

Do it without drama.

Khan hasn't gotten any of his football hires right. Gene Smith was retained as general manager. Dave Caldwell was hired by Khan to be the GM. Bradley won 14 games in four years.

Doug Marrone was picked to be the coach by Khan after he brought in Tom Coughlin as an executive. The only successful season in Khan's tenure resulted in the firing of Coughlin after the NFLPA warned players not to sign with the Jags because of the many grievances they had been fined.

The 1-15 season ended after Marrone and Caldwell were fired.

Khan's biggest flaw as an owner is his inability to find the right people to lead his franchise. He can't afford to make another mistake with his replacement, since hiring Meyer was a costly failure.

If he does, he will be setting up the franchise for another lost decade.

He has to get it right this time.
