Urban Meyer was fired as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"After a lot of thought and consideration, I am bitterly disappointed to say that an immediate change is necessary for everyone," Khan said.

I told Urban of the change this evening. I stated in October that regaining our trust and respect was essential. "Unfortunately, it did not happen," Khan said.

He said that he would not comment further until after the conclusion of the NFL season.

Trent Baalke will continue to be the general manager and will work with Darrell Bevell to ensure that our team will be inspired and competitive over our final four games of the season.

The Jags will have a new head coach for the rest of the year in Bevell.

He was the interim head coach of the Lions after MattPatricia was fired. Bevell went 1-4 over the last five games.

The team posted a 2-11 record during Meyer's brief time on the sideline, and his departure comes following a series of mistakes after taking the job in January.

Tom Pelissero painted an unflattering portrait of Meyer's tenure.

Sources say Meyer's hard-charging and sometimes condescending approach has made players and coaches frustrated with the team's 2-10 season and his repeated public comments shifting blame to players and coaches.

Meyer said during a staff meeting that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are not. He denied the rumor after Jacksonville's 20-0 loss to Tennessee.

Urban Meyer is on the problem around the team.

Josh Lambo, a former kicker for the Jags, told Rick Stroud of the Times that Meyer kicked him and cursed at him before a preseason game this year.

This move has been in the works for a long time.

A video showing a woman dancing close to Meyer's lap went viral in October. He apologized days later, saying he had stayed behind after the team's road loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and gone out to dinner with his family.

The story probably wasn't grounds for dismissal, and it would have blown over eventually. Michael Silver of the NFL Network reported that the situation worsened internal problems in Jacksonville.

The partnership between Meyer and the Jacksonville team seemed like a bad idea even though it was supposed to work.

The 57-year-old resigned from Florida in late 2009, returning to the school for one more season. His health was one of the reasons he walked away from Ohio State.

Stewart Mandel of The Athletic described Meyer as a man who takes losses harder than any coach he's ever encountered.

The legendary coach was taking a job where a team can lose six or seven games and still make the playoffs. He made a public pledge to turn things around after two defeats.

The room was not aware that Jacksonville was going to hire Chris Doyle as the director of sports performance. He left Iowa because he made racist comments and showed racial bias against Black Hawkeyes players.

Meyer acknowledged that he saw the impact of the decision and the distraction it caused.

In September, CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora reported that "Meyer's ability to adapt to the NFL game and make a smooth transition from college is a topic of considerable debate in league circles."

Meyer's temper and lack of familiarity with the ebbs and flows of the NFL calendar has rubbed the Jacksonville Jaguars staff and players the wrong way. The staff with extensive pro experience and those who lack it are at odds at times, and the staff with less experience has suffered as a result. His comments to players and coaches after the game have struck many as strange.

Some college coaches have found success in the NFL. Meyer wouldn't be joining that group.

His hiring was a mistake for theJaguars, and admitting that mistake now is better than waiting for things to change.

It's probably too late for another coach to change Jacksonville's fortunes this year, but the organization has the chance to reset its future while still building around Lawrence.
