Apple has a new return to office date: indefinite.

Apple has a new timetable for when its employees will return to their physical offices.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, told employees in a message that the company was not returning to hybrid work until a date was determined.

He said the decision was made because of the surge of the coronaviruses around the world. Mr. Cook said that the company would provide an additional $1,000 to each employee.

The company confirmed the postponement but did not say anything else.

Apple temporarily closed three retail stores in Miami, Annapolis, Md., andOttawa after a spike of positive tests among employees.

Unlike other tech companies that allow employees to request to work from home permanently, Apple does not want its workers to go back to work at the office when it is safe to do so. Over the summer, some of the company's workers fought the plan, leading to the creation of AppleToo, a broader activist movement at the company.

Apple has joined a growing list of companies that have bowed to the unpredictable ebbs and flows of the swine flu by scrapping specific return dates.
