Rafael Benitez: Everton boss says he cannot fix club's problems in five months as he bids to turn form around

In order to solve four or five years of frustration at the club, manager Rafael Benitez insists he cannot be expected to fix the past in five months.

When away fans started chanting abuse during Sunday's defeat at Crystal Palace - after he replaced Richarlison, who was injured, the public show of dissent did not look good for his prospects.

He has spoken to Farhad Moshiri since then and is confident in his position and long-term plan for the club.

There are highlights from Crystal Palace's win overEverton.

I was talking to Mr. Moshiri this morning. "I have meetings with the chairman, the chief executive and they are behind me," said the manager, whose side have taken just four points from the last 30.

They have experienced changing managers, trying to adapt, and it wasn't working.

Which is the feeling of the last years for a fan of the team? You know the answer.

A lot of my fans are telling me the same thing. They know that the problems are not just ones that can be fixed in a few months.

The owner, the chairman and the chief executive talk a lot about what they want to do in the future, not just the present.

"We are thinking about January and not just January, after to see what we can do to make the team stronger."

The idea was to be here three years-plus with the new stadium, and that's what he said. You have to keep going. We will be in the top 10 if we play one game.

The long-term plan for the club is still being worked on.

The odds are against him, but he is more than capable of handling it. He proved that when he was interim manager at the time, that he could win in the Europa League if fans did not like him.

He has been injured a lot this season, with last season's top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin out since August, as well as the likes of Richarlison and Tom Davies.

In the face of growing dissent, he arrived at his press conference armed with statistics to support his cause.

He said that last year the squad was around 16 players, and that a lot of them were injury prone, and that they were losing between 30 and 40 per cent of the games.

Dominic was playing 85 percent of the games last season, but now he is playing 18 percent.

Richarlison could be out for a number of weeks.

Richarlison was injured at the Olympics and maybe he has been overloading.

If you have a squad of 25 players, the majority of the players are playing more than they would expect.

These problems of the past are being managed. We take responsibility because we know we can improve, but sometimes we can't.

Richarlison is an example of how you have to deal with players overloading.

We will try to improve the squad in January in order to do well.

Richarlison defended the decision to take him out of the game.

He told evertonfc.com that he and the team were vindicated by the decision to let him go with a calf injury.

If I stayed on, I would have done more damage and faced a longer period out of the team because I wasn't able to play at my maximum capacity.

The manager was trying to protect me.
