The default command line experience in Windows 11 will be Windows Terminal. Windows 11 supports setting Windows Terminal as default, but the Windows console host is the default terminal emulator. Command prompt and PowerShell are always open in the Windows console host.

Windows Terminal will be the default experience on Windows 11 devices over the course of 2022, according to a program manager at Microsoft. We will start with the Windows Insider Program and move through rings until we reach everyone on Windows 11.

Developers will soon see Windows Terminal if they try to launch the Command Prompt. Microsoft has put a lot of effort into making Windows Terminal a solid home for developers, so it is a change that modernizes the overall Windows console environment.

Windows Terminal was first introduced in Windows 10 in 2019. Multiple tab support, themes, customization, and support for full graphics-based text rendering are included in the Windows Terminal app.
