House Votes To Hold Mark Meadows In Contempt—Indictment Could Follow

The House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to recommend the Justice Department bring contempt of Congress charges against former White House chief of staff MarkMeadows for failing to comply with a subpoena from the committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The House voted to recommend contempt charges against Meadows, who refused to appear for a deposition last week and stopped turning documents over to the committee.

The vote on Tuesday marks the final step in the process of bringing the case to a grand jury to consider indicting the congressman.

After his attorney claimed that the committee was asking for information that should be protected by executive privilege, Meadows reversed course.

During an appearance on Fox News's Hannity Monday night, Meadows claimed there was no criminal intent in his decision to not appear for his deposition.

After receiving a subpoena, he changed his stance multiple times. He initially ignored the committee's requests, but decided to start cooperating in late November after Rep. Bennie Thompson sent a letter to his attorney. The committee was told on December 7 that the investigation was over. The documents that he turned over, which he and his attorney apparently didn't consider protected by executive privilege, revealed that he held discussions about appointing an alternate slate of electors to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

There are very few indictments on contempt of Congress charges. The first person to be charged with contempt of Congress since 1983 was Bannon. A trial is set for July for Bannon.

Three prominent Fox News personalities sent him text messages on January 6 urging him to push Trump to call for his supporters to stop their riot at the Capitol. The three Fox News stars have not commented on the texts.

MarkMeadows reverses course now that he has a committee.
