Cornell University Shuts Down Parts Of Campus Amid Covid Surge

Cornell University said Tuesday it was closing facilities to students immediately, moving exams online and shutting down all school activities for undergrads and events on its Ithaca, N.Y., campus just days before the end of term because of a rapid spread of Covid-19 among the student population.

Cornell President Martha Pollack wrote a letter to the community that said the school had upgraded its alert level to red.

The Ivy League institution recorded 469 active student cases as of Sunday and a positivity rate of 3% for the week of December 6.

There was evidence of the new variant omicron in a number of positive student tests Monday, but so far no student has become seriously ill.

The recognition ceremony for December graduates was canceled and libraries and gyms have been closed due to the final exams being moved online.

Visitors and guests will not be allowed on the campus unless a student is taking a break.

Offices and labs will remain open and mandatory testing will continue for employees.
