The New York Giants will be without quarterback Daniel Jones this week against the Dallas Cowboys because of a neck injury, according to a source.
Jones was not cleared for contact after undergoing his weekly tests. The injury did not get worse, but the images still made the medical professionals cautious.
Jones was expected to miss this week's game according to The Athletic.
Mike Glennon is likely to start again. Jake Fromm could also see action.
The Giants will have to decide if the risk is worth the reward at some point this season. They only have three games left and are out of the playoffs with a 4-9 record.
There is hope that Leonard Williams could return this season after he suffered an arm injury against the Los Angeles Clippers, according to a source. There were initial fears of a serious injury, but they were dispelled.
Williams has never missed a game because of injury.
Jones has missed the past two games because of a neck injury he sustained in a win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Glennon started in his place and threw for 191 yards and two touchdown in a 37-21 loss to the Chargers.
Despite not being cleared for contact, Jones is still playing well. He worked out in Los Angeles on Sunday.
This part of the situation has been awkward. Jones has been able to do everything without limitations. He has not been cleared for contact on Sundays.
The Giants and Jones have been hopeful that he would be cleared, but they couldn't say with certainty that he would be back this season. There was nothing after the injury that indicated the strain had gotten worse.
"I have nothing negative, nothing less optimistic than I am, if that makes sense," Judge said Monday. I don't know if anything is going in a different direction. We're waiting to hear from the doctors if it's for this week or not.
Jones has completed 64.3% of his passes this season for 2,428 yards with 10 touchdown and seven interceptions. It's not what the Giants or their young quarterback were hoping for.
Jones was supposed to make a big leap this year. The Giants added weapons in hopes of building an offense around him, after he was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in 2019.
It hasn't worked out. The offensive line has struggled to pass protect, the team's top playmakers haven't been able to stay healthy, and Jones' performance has been inconsistent.
The Giants added to Freddie Kitchens' responsibilities last month after they fired offensive coordinators. Jones has had three different playcallers in his first three years in the NFL.
