The global streaming giant is still struggling to find enough customers willing to pay what is already one of the world's most affordable prices nearly six years after launching in India.
The American firm lowered the subscription price in India by at least 18% and up to 60.1%. The Basic plan, which allows streaming on any device but caps the resolution at 480p, costs 199 in India, down from 499.
The price of the Standard, which improves the video resolution to HD and allows two simultaneous views, has been reduced. The price of the Premium version of the service has gone down from 799 to 649.
This isn't the first time that the company has played with prices in India. In India, after months of testing, the first mobile only tier in the world was priced at 199. The plan is now available for 149.
India is one of the largest entertainment markets. Despite sinking nearly $1 billion on it to date, Netflix has struggled to produce content that helps it court customers beyond a small group of loud users.
Disney's Hotstar continues to dominate the market thanks to a lot of larger ad-supported local library content, as well as a lot of sports streaming rights, and without much assistance from the Twitter crowd. According to App Annie, YouTube has about half a billion users in the South Asian market.
India will have 89 million people who pay for subscription services by the end of the year, up from 57 million last year, according to a research firm.
The price cut in India came at a time when the streaming giant has raised the monthly price in several parts of the world.
