Apple has released an app called Tracker Detect, which will allow users to search for AirTags or other Find My-compatible trackers, such as the Chipolo One Spot tracking tag. If it finds any devices that have been separated from their owners, it will let you play a sound on them so you can find them, and it will give you instructions on how to figure out who the AirTag belongs to.
Apple promised that the app would allow users to find potentially malicious trackers without their knowledge, when it was announced in June. This app doesn't seem to constantly do scans in the background and alert you if something is up, it's just a manual search. It isn't helping the users of AirTags to actually use them because it doesn't help with the tracking of the AirTags attached to an Apple account.

You can run a manual Scan.
Apple didn't immediately respond to request for comment from The Verge, but said that the app gave the ability to Scan for AirTag or supported Find My enabled item trackers that might be traveling with them without their knowledge. We are raising the bar on privacy for our users and hope others will do the same.
The tracker didn't show up in a Play Store search for some people. You can install it by following this link.
