OSHA opens probe into deadly Amazon warehouse collapse in Illinois

The OSHA is investigating a collapse at an Amazon warehouse in Illinois. Six workers were killed by a tornado that devastated the area.

The Amazon delivery depot was hit by a tornado on Friday. The governor said in a press conference that six workers were killed and one was injured.

More than 60 people were confirmed dead in Kentucky after a tornado ripped through the state.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down in Illinois on Friday. The roof of the warehouse collapsed while the walls collapsed inward, according to the fire chief.

Amazon said that site leaders at the facility told employees to take shelter. Amazon said the tornado probably formed in the parking lot.

OSHA has six months to complete its probe, issue citations and propose monetary penalties if there are violations of workplace safety and or health regulations, Scott Allen told CNBC. Allen said that the agency had compliance officers at the warehouse since Saturday.

Representatives from Amazon didn't respond to a request for comment on the OSHA probe.

Amazon said it was assisting with local relief efforts in the area.

Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for Amazon, said in a statement that the company was deeply sad about the deaths of members of its family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by the tornado.
