Rivian R1T is first electric pickup to win MotorTrend's 'Truck of the Year'

The R1T, Rivian's first all-electric truck, was named MotorTrend's Truck of the Year for 2022.

The pickup with 314 miles of range was the most expensive new or updated truck model. The Ram 1500 TRX won last year.

Ed Loh is the head of editorial at MotorTrend. It's the first all-electric truck to win and the first time MotorTrend has given a car maker the top title. At the end of September, the R1T was delivered to customers. The R1S electric SUV will arrive later in 2022.

In a recent phone call, Loh explained that it's difficult to win in the truck category. Safety, efficiency, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence, and performance of intended function are some of the categories examined by the automotive outlet. The right mix of luxury, comfort, and technology is required for trucks to be capable of hauling and off-roading.
"This is the only thing like this on the road that I know of," said Loh. It has no weaknesses.

It still qualifies for the full federal electric vehicle tax credit despite its steep price. The base Model 3 is the most affordable vehicle at $44,990, though some state incentives still apply.

It has a fast 0-to-60-mph acceleration, off-road handling, and clever engineering. The cleverness includes its efficient use of space and four electric motor at each wheel, as well as a badass camp kitchen that they built.

The R1T makes camping and off-roading much more doable for the eco-conscious urbanite.

Rivian didn't copy the minimalist aesthetic ofTesla. There are knobs and buttons around the screens. He said the R1T was a much friendlier place to be than aTesla.

MotorTrend named the Lucid Air its "Car of the Year" last month, so electric vehicles are already coming out on top of the new year.
