Is Kyler Murray the best QB from Texas?

Who is the best quarterback in Texas high school history? It's a question that makes people laugh, stirs emotion, and creates debate in the Lone Star State.

Dozens of names came back from Texas, including Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Vince Young, and Y.A. Tittle.

The majority of people said that Murray was the best. He floored people with his arm, his running talent, and his résumé: he was 42-0 with three state titles.

For 60 years, I recruited out of there. I have seen them all, but what he accomplished is staggering.

Gilbert said it was hard to argue with a guy who had not lost. That's the name of the game, right?

Drew Brees, a former quarterback for the Saints, finished in the top five of more lists than anyone but Murray.

Andrew Luck was picked by former Texas coach Tom Herman.

Vince Young of Houston Madison was put on top of the list by Mack Brown.

The grandson of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is one of the three people mentioned by Randy Allen.

Whitehouse coach Adam Cook said that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback that has ever played in Texas, and that Kyler Murray is the guy.

It is similar to Jordan and Kobe. You can go anywhere. I held the state passing record.

Everyone has their own set of parameters for who is the best. Murray would be at the top if he won a title.

According to data from Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Grant Gunnell of Houston St. Pius X would be the top ranked player. Second place is 1,700 yards behind Gunnell.

It sounds like it has to start with skill and talent.

High schools used to run mostly ground-based schemes with quarterbacks like Sammy Baugh. Most agree that a Murray-like talent could have been missed.

Allen became one of 17 teams to win three consecutive state titles and one of 271 teams to go perfect in Texas history with Murray at quarterback. He was the No. 1 recruit.
