This year, Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 28. It is a day families gather for a festive meal. It has been a tradition for many far-flung family members to return home and enjoy a lavish turkey dinner. But retailers have also chosen this day to advertise strong promotions and many open their doors late that day to pull people away from the table and into stores. I have attempted to list some of the leading retailers and their store openings on Thursday and Black Friday.

You might find it interesting to know that Black Friday originated in 1960, when Philadelphia police griped about congested streets clogged with motorists and pedestrians. They called it Black Friday. Retailers liked the term, since it often marked the time in the year when they moved from being in the red to getting in the black on their accounting tables. While red ink indicated a loss, black was a welcome change. It also marked the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Another interesting fun holiday fact: Macy's first parade was on Thanksgiving in 1924 to get people into a shopping mood.

Today, millions of people shop on Black Friday. Retailers often post their specials early, giving consumers the opportunity to plan their shopping spree. Other retailers wait until the last moment to release their ads, hoping that customers check back to find the special electronic gadget or toy. Of course, many people today shop online (which is always open-even on Thanksgiving) or wait for Cyber Monday, which is supposed to have even lower prices on the internet.

Observers find that fewer people now show up for door busters, since some of the merchandise can easily be bought on the internet. Nonetheless, 61% of people plan to shop on Black Friday this year. According to the NRF, 165 million Americans shopped on Black Friday in 2018. Gifts were important. Customers spent an average of $313.29 in 2018, of which $217 was for gifts. But, the NRF notes that millennials spent slightly more: $419.52 on gifts.

According to BlackFriday.com, consumers said they were looking for deals in clothing, home goods, laptops, PCs and TVs, gift cards, and travel. Gadgets and new tech items may also be favored.

Below, I have listed stores that have announced plans to be closed or open on Thanksgiving Day. I also note their Friday hours. The list will be adjusted as additional information becomes available. (Flip through the table to see the complete list.)

In addition, a few stores are still unsure, but I expect to hear they will open. Those stores include: Aeropostale, Ashley Homestores, Dollar Tree, Jos. A. Bank, Lucky Brand, and Nordstrom Rack.

I congratulate the management teams who observe the holiday. Their associates can enjoy the holiday and will be ready to fight for every dollar that customers will want to spend during the hectic Friday and remaining holiday shopping days that follow.
