California Gov. Newsom Vows to Use Tactics of Texas Abortion Ban for Gun Control Legislation

The Supreme Court decision that allowed Texas to maintain its ban on most abortions once a heartbeat is detected was denounced by the governor of California. He promised to use it as a model to pass legislation that would give private citizens the power to ban assault weapons in California. Private citizens in Texas are able to stop abortion. The person is Newsom. If that is the case, we will allow Californians to file lawsuits against those who put assault weapons on the streets. CA can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives if Texas can ban abortion.

Newsom had been critical of the Texas law, but now seems to have joined the mentality of the law. The Supreme Court has outlined the way legislation can be written to protect it from federal court review, and that is what Newsom sees as the reason for refusing to strike down the Texas law. California will use its authority to protect people's lives if states can shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives. A federal judge struck down California's ban on assault weapons because he compared them to pocket knives.

All abortions are banned after six weeks of pregnancy in Texas. Private citizens can file lawsuits against anyone who aided or abetted an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. California will allow private citizens to file lawsuits against manufacturers and distributors of assault weapons, as well as ghost gun kits or parts, for at least $10,000 per violation, according to the governor. If the most efficient way to keep these weapons off the streets is to add private lawsuits, we should do that.

The Supreme Court decision to let the Texas abortion ban stand had been predicted by legal experts. It was the reason why gun rights groups opposed the Texas abortion law. Chief Justice John Roberts warned that it would create a model that others could apply to different issues. At a time when he is trying to increase his national profile after beating back a Republican-led recall effort, Newsom is picking up the baton. This is unlikely to become a reality soon. The state legislature takes around eight months to approve new bills, so any new gun control law would have to be passed first.
