Mercedes protests rejected by Formula 1 stewards as title goes to Max Verstappen

After the grand prix, Mercedes and Red Bull met with race officials.

The Mercedes team will appeal against one of the decisions made by the Formula 1 officials.

After a late safety-car period, Red Bull's Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to win his first World Championship.

Mercedes argued that the race director did not apply the rules correctly and that the result should be changed.

The decision to restart the race at the start of the final lap was 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780 800-313-5780

Other rules gave Masi the power to act.

Their second appeal was over Verstappen nosing ahead of Hamilton a number of times on the lap before the restart. Mercedes are not going to appeal.

What was going on?

Masi's decision to restart the race at the start of the final lap caused a lot of controversy.

Hamilton had dominated the race after passing Verstappen at the start and being allowed to keep the lead despite cutting the chicane when Verstappen tried to pass him back.

The safety car was used and Verstappen had to change his tires after Nicholas Latifi crashed. Hamilton would have lost the lead.

Verstappen passed Hamilton on the final lap because it put him behind Hamilton on the fresher, grippier tyres.

Why was it controversial?

Lap leaders are usually allowed to pass the lapped cars at restarts so they don't interfere with the race.

Verstappen was given a clear run at his rival by Masi. I did not do the same to the cars of Verstappen and Sainz.

If the clerk of the course thinks it's safe to do so, and the message "lapped cars may now overtake" has been sent to all competitors via the official messaging system, any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required.

The safety car will return to the pits once the last car has passed the leader, according to article 48.12 of the sporting regulations. The race started at the end of the lap.

Mercedes argued that Hamilton would have won the race if the rules were applied this way.

The stewards ruled that a rule gave Masi the power to control the safety car.

They said that article 48.12 may not have been applied fully, but that article 48.13 is mandatory when the safety car returns to the pits.

The stewards believe that Mercedes' request to change the result by taking the positions at the end of the last lap is not appropriate because it is effectively shortening the race.

Is it possible to overtake under caution?

The stewards said that Verstappen moved slightly in front of Hamilton at a time when the race was restarting.

Christian said that they never wanted to end up in front of the stewards. We don't race with barristers. The stewards made the right call, but it was a shame it ended up there.

We've always talked about not finishing races under safety cars. The race director made the right call.

He said Mercedes' protest felt a little bit desperate.
