UK has Omicron Covid patients in hospital, government confirms

A government minister has confirmed that people have been admitted to hospital with the Omicron variant.

There were cases in the hospital with Omicron, according to the education secretary. There is a lag to hospitalisation because people are tested over the past two weeks, he said.

The chief medical adviser of the UK Health Security Agency said in an interview that hospitals were seeing an increase in the number of people with Omicron and that the numbers in hospital were expected to increase.

There has been no deaths reported so far from Omicron, although there is a time lag of up to four weeks between infections and death. It's too early to make any assumptions at this point in time.
