According to sources, Dan Lanning will be the next Oregon coach.
Lanning was hired as a linebackers coach at Georgia in the fall of 2018, and was promoted to defensive coordinator in the spring of 2019. The best defense in the country this season has been coached by him in the three years he has been at the helm.
Lanning was on Kirby Smart's staff at Georgia prior to landing at Arizona State as a recruiting assistant. He was a graduate assistant on the Alabama staff.
The players of the Oregon team were told that Lanning had been hired, according to a source.
We are happy for Dan and his family. He and Sauphia have been a part of the Georgia family for the last four years, and we thank them for all they did for Georgia Football and the Athens community, said Georgia coach Kirby Smart in a Saturday statement. This is a testament to a successful program.
We will move forward with Glenn and Will as co-defensive coordinators while he is with us for the College Football Playoff. We are both looking forward to the exam.
Less than a week ago, Mario Cristobal, who had been in Eugene since 2018, decided to return to his alma mater, Miami, and become the Hurricanes' next coach, replacing Manny Diaz.
Cal's Justin Wilcox, Kelani Sitake, and even former Oregon coach Chip Kelly were all linked to the job. Rob Mullens went with a first-time head coach who led Georgia's defense to an SEC East title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Alabama coaching staff in 2015 has six active head coaches, including Mel Tucker, Lane Kiffin, Billy Napier, and Lanning.
Bryan McClendon, who played at Georgia and was part of the staff from 2007 to 2015, will be the interim coach for the Alamo Bowl. There are more connections that don't stop there. The teams will play a game in Atlanta in September of 2022.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on Oregon's decision.
