United Airlines Reverses Santa Hat Ban for Flight Attendants But Christmas Jumpers Remain Outlawed

Flight attendants at United Airlines will be allowed to wear Santa hats and reindeer antler head accessories after a brief stint. The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA) was worried that the accessories made their members look bad, but they have now relented and embraced the holiday season.

Christmas-themed jumpers are not allowed because flight attendants must remain easily identifiable as a member of the airline crew, and a Christmas jumper is a step too far for many aviation regulators.

Alaska Airlines and Virgin Atlantic have been able to get around the ban on Christmas jumpers by issuing them to their crew as uniforms. United Airlines doesn't have any plans to design a Christmas jumper.

Flight attendants at United Airlines used to be told to wear conservative festive accessories but this rule has been relaxed as long as the adornment is professional.

Conservative used to mean no flashing lights, glitter or slogans.

United has given the green light to accessories that are bright and light up if general appearance rules are maintained. A colorful festive earring is okay if it is no longer than the maximum length of uniform approved earrings.

Christmas pins, socks, scarves, and head accessories have been approved.

The Association of Flight Attendants tried to ban light-up necklaces and Santa hats in the year 2019. The ban has been dropped for United flight attendants.
