The University of Oregon is said to be hiring Dan Lanning as its new head football coach, according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The University of Miami is where Cristobal began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1998 and where he left the program in December to take over.

The Miami native was the head coach of the Oregon team for five years. The team earned a spot in the Alamo Bowl after a 10-3 record in 2021. The athletic department was looking for a new coach and Bryan McClendon was the passing game coach.

His success continued a trend that has seen the Oregon football program become one of the most successful in the nation.

The.754 winning percentage is sixth in the country behind only Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Clemson.

The Ducks have finished inside the top 10 seven times.

Lanning comes to the University of Georgia after three years as the defensive coach. The nation's scoring defense was led by the bulldogs.

The 35-year-old Missouri native will serve as a head coach for the first time after 14 years as an assistant at the high school and collegiate levels. He's worked on college staffs at Pittsburgh, Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama and Memphis.

Lanning explained in August that he was waiting for the right opportunity to arise and not jumping at the first offer.

The grass is not always green. He said that he learned that from watching Smart for a long time. Those opportunities will come when you are successful and where you are. My focus right now is being here.

The chance to take over a successful program like Oregon would have been hard to pass up, and now he'll look to extend the Ducks' recent run as a consistent force in the Pac-12.

Lanning's experience in recruiting against Power Five competition will be important in the months and years to come.
