Omicron Could Elevate England Covid Deaths To Between 25,000 And 75,000 Over Next Five Months, Researchers Say

The new date is Dec 11, 2021.

If the government doesn't take more steps to slow the spread of the coronaviruses, the death toll from Covid-19 in England could rise to between 25,000 and 75,000 over the next five months.

The number of people in England who had been exposed to coronaviruses by December last year was 12 percent, up from nine percent in November. Britain is currently gripped by its third and deadliest wave of the virus, blamed on a new strain that is highly infectious. The surge in cases has already led to the country suffering record numbers of daily deaths. The photo was taken by Tolga Akmen.

The researchers used new data on how the omicron variant may evade immune responses.

Their best-case scenario is for 175,000 Covid-19 hospitalizations and 24,700 deaths between December and April, in which the variant has a low chance of avoiding an immune response.

If the omicron variant is able to evolve to avoid an immune response and boosters aren't effective at battling it, there will be 492,000 Covid-19 hospitalizations, double England's peak in January, and 74,800 deaths during the same time period.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this week that people will need to show proof of a vaccine or negative test to enter nightclubs or large events in the United Kingdom.

In the most optimistic scenario, the impact of Omicron would be reduced with mild control measures such as working from home. The most pessimistic scenario suggests that we may have to endure more stringent restrictions to ensure the health service is not overwhelmed. Booster jabs are vital, but may not be enough.

The United Kingdom was one of the first countries to identify cases of the omicron variant after the World Health Organization announced the discovery. Travelers entering the U.K. will be required to take a test two days after arrival and wear a mask in shops. Omicron was identified by the WHO as a "variant of concern" due to its high number of mutations, though South African doctors have noted that the omicron variant has milder symptoms of Covid-19.
