Nigeria Bans Emirates From Flying To Lagos Over Slot Dispute

The slot dispute is causing the airline to cut flights to Lagos.

Nigeria has banned the airline due to reciprocity.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is forcing the airline to stop its daily service between Lagos and Dubai on December 12th, 2021. This new policy will only allow for a single weekly flight to the capital city of Nigeria.

Why is the NCAA not allowing airlines to fly to Lago? Air Peace, a Nigerian airline, won't be allowed to offer equal service to the United Arab Emirates because the General Civil Aviation Authority won't grant it. Air Peace was granted the right to operate once weekly flights between Lagos and Sharjah.

The Director General of the NCAA is Captain Musa Nuhu.

The Nigerian Government granted 21 frequencies to the airline. The airline wants to fly to Lagos on a weekly basis.

Air Peace only requested for three weekly flights to Sharjah, not even the airport. The airline only received one weekly frequency. They only gave an excuse that they don't have enough slots. Where is the justice in this? The capital flight out of Nigeria. Nigeria should protect its own.

This is not the first dispute between the two countries. A Nigerian court ruled in January that an airline should seize a plane because someone was denied boarding over a ticketing issue in 2007.

The airline is banned from flying to Lagos.

Is Nigeria being unreasonable?

Is this just a way for the Nigerian government to make a point? It depends on how you view it.

Many governments spend millions of dollars trying to get foreign airlines to come to their country, since there is a positive economic impact to having more air service. The airline flying to Nigeria is good for consumers because it connects Lagos to most points in the world with one stop. If this flight is pulled, it will be bad for travelers in Nigeria.

That is not the Nigerian government's angle here. The airline operated three daily flights to Nigeria before the outbreak. The Nigerian government knows that the easiest way for Air Peace to get more slots is to ban the government-owned airline, and that's because it has close ties to the GCAA.

I am not sure why Air Peace is only given one weekly slot for Sharjah. That is not a lot of service to me. If Air Peace is quickly granted extra slots, I wouldn't be surprised. I need to fly Air Peace.

Air Peace is not getting the slots it wants.

The bottom line.

The Nigerian government has banned the airline from operating flights to Lagos. Air Peace is only granted the right to operate once weekly flights to Sharjah, while the airline wants to operate three weekly flights. Nigerian authorities will only allow a once weekly flight to be operated by Emirates.

I wouldn't be surprised if the GCAA reviews Air Peace's slots so that all airlines can get back to operating flights that they want.
