Duke has hired Texas A&M's Mike Elko as its next coach.

After four years with Texas A&M, Elko is leaving to become the new head coach at Wake Forest. He was a candidate for several Power 5 head-coaching opportunities.

Tony Elliott, who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia, accepted the head-coaching job at Virginia. Sources said that other candidates included former Dallas Cowboys head coach, and current Michigan offensive coach, Josh Gattis, as well as Army coach, Jeff Monken, and Dallas Cowboys assistant George Edwards.

David Cutcliffe had been the coach at Duke for 14 years. The Duke coach led the Blue Devil to 77 wins, six bowl appearances and the Coastal Division title.

Duke failed to win an Atlantic Coast Conference game for the first time in seven years. The Blue Devil's third straight losing season was theirs.

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson hired Elko to work for him at four schools.
