Popovich will finish his tenure as Team USA head coach with an 11-3 record and a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as a seventh-place finish in the World Cup in which most of the best U.S. players declined to play.

Kerr will be assisted by a number of people, including Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Grant Hill, the former NBA all-star who recently replaced Jerry Colangelo as director of Team USA, selected Kerr.

The Golden State Warriors have won three NBA titles under Kerr, who is considered to be one of the best coaches in the NBA. Kerr was the coach of a team that won three straight NBA Finals and back-to-back NBA Championships and had two former Most Valuable Players in Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. Kerr won three rings with the Chicago Bulls and was a member of two Spurs championship teams under Popovich. Popovich has a career coaching win percentage of 66.4%, which is second only to Kerr.
What to watch for.

Popovich has been the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs since 1996, making him the longest-tenured head coach in the NBA. Spur Tim Duncan retired from the NBA in 2016 and there have been rumors about his retirement ever since. When Popovich does retire, he said a former player and current Spurs assistant coach could take his place. In January, Popovich was ejected from a game and called on Hammon to step in as acting head coach, making her the first female head coach in NBA history.

At least one of the teams coached by Kerr, Popovich and Spoelstra has appeared in the last 23 NBA Finals.
